Ain't no cure for the Summertime Blues

Monday, July 26, 2010

What a catchy tune, huh! (See title of blog). But seriously, what has happened to volume in the past few months? Did everyone put everything on pause? Phone calls are down more than 30%* comparing July to June, and even worse, traditional advertising doesn't seem to be working. Many practice throw their faith into Social media, which is always a disappointment.  Yes I said it, no one else will.

So, what is the answer?

The answer is to be careful. Why do we spend money on advertising? Simple. To make more money. There is a reason practices go dark during certain periods, and this is one of them. I recommend using this time to streamline internal operations. Go through all of the charts of patients that didn't convert and then call, email them and send a letter. Seem a little overboard? You'll catch more flies with honey than with advertising. Hmm, that adage didn't work like I intended it to. What I mean is you're much more apt to get a new surgical patient by trying to communicate with a non-converted patient than trying to obtain one through advertising.

OK, that was a little longwinded. There's a reason ghost writers work for me.

Moving on. I've met several practices that throw money away, simply because they thought that is the way it was done. Where did they find this secret bit of information? Who knows!  My guess, their friendly media rep ;) My advice is to cut back and only keep surefire advertising until September. After the kids are back in school, phones will ring again!
